Notes

Britten wrote this string quartet in 1927 at the request of his viola teacher, Audrey Alston, for her to perform with her quartet. The piece was revised in January 1928, and the fair copy instrumental parts prepared, although there is no record in Britten's diaries relating to an actual performance.
