Notes

Britten composed music for the first programme in a series of six short features. Louis MacNeice is said to have asked him for music 'of a rather special nature, being an impression of early Greek music' (Philip Reed, in A Britten source book, ed. John Evans, Philip Reed, Paul Wilson, (Aldeburgh: Britten-Pears Foundation, 1987), p. 163). The manuscript score is missing.
