An advertisement in Tempo 1/4, American Series, January 1941 announced a forthcoming performance of this piece with the NBC orchestra under George Szell. Britten refers to the 'Szell matter' in a letter dated ca. November 1940, and Elizabeth Mayer notes in her diary on 12 February 1941 that Britten was 'stuck with "Zaubergeige" [The bewitched violin].
