The original version comprises a lengthy piano prelude that does not appear in the revision. The revision uses the vocal material from the first source and is extended to include more of the text. The first source is marked 'Jul 1923', although in the revised version Britten writes (mistakenly) that the first part was 'written in 1922'. The first source is also adjacent to the second source, which comprises a sketch for the revised version.
